OLED is widely considered to be the most immersive panel technology, whether it’s gaming, media consumption, or something else. The per-pixel dimming that is behind the true blacks, instantaneous response times, and true HDR experience on OLED displays can’t be matched on IPS or VA monitors. The privilege of owning an OLED monitor has largely been reserved for those with deep pockets, until now. We’re seeing a growing number of affordable OLED gaming displays from well-known brands in the last few months. For less than the price I paid for my 1440p 27″ IPS monitor five years ago, I can now buy a 1440p 27″ OLED monitor, and that’s nothing to be scoffed at. At the same time, though, for those who’ve been 1440p gamers for 5–7 years already, this development, although welcome, doesn’t seem entirely pleasant. Gamers who want their monitor upgrade to feel truly transformative don’t have too much to celebrate when it comes to the larger pricing of OLED displays. 4K OLEDs remain out of reach of the majority, and the 1440p displays that have dropped in prices aren’t without major compromises.
