After a few days at Maker Faire Shenzhen, it’s hard not to rethink what a “smart home” can be. The event is packed with projects that aren’t just flashy prototypes, but are instead thoughtful, working solutions built by people who care about reliability, privacy, and efficiency. Some of the ideas I saw there could easily fit into my own setup, and a few might even replace things I already rely on. Between DIY projects, open-source hardware, and genuinely clever problem-solving, I came away with a list of ideas that feel more inventive, and more practical, than anything coming out of the big smart-home brands right now.
