Design tooling has split into two camps over the last year or so. On one side are the manual editors I've always lived in - Figma, Affinity, Krita, Photopea, Penpot, etc. On the other are the prompt-first generators, which two years ago I would have written off as a gimmick, but they've proven me wrong. There's serious money behind them now, the tools genuinely seem to understand UI conventions, and the more time I spend with them the less obvious it is where the line between design tool and AI generator actually is.

Back in roughly November 2025, I came across a random Reddit thread speculating that Belkin might soon drop support for the majority of its smart home products. I quickly tapped on it and started reading. "There's no way they're cutting off support for Wemo, right?" was the first thought I had, but the longer I scrolled, the more it seemed like that was exactly what was happening. At the time, it just didn't make sense, so I quickly forgot about it. When I look back, the writing was definitely on the wall. For weeks, I'd been battling getting my Wemo smart plugs to stay connected to my Google Home-powered smart home.

It feels like every time I open a browser tab or boot up a casual game, my PC fan suddenly spins up to 100% like a jet engine taking off, only to drop to a whisper two seconds later. The constant acoustic revving is driving me insane, and it's more common than you think.

Upon scrolling through a family friend's router client list one evening, I noticed something alarming. I was trying to track down connection issues with an unrelated device, and when I had to scroll multiple times to get through the laundry list of devices they had connected, I knew their network was becoming a bit absurd. Most of them weren't actual devices they used, like a PC, phone, or NAS, but instead, they were IoT devices that were installed and forgotten about: a camera, a doorbell, a TV, some smart plugs, and a handful of sensors. These cheap gadgets typically have the worst track record in terms of firmware security, so I moved all of them to the guest network. It took about ten minutes and solved other networking issues the household was having.
