I've never been the best coder, whether in college with Assembly or C++, or in any other language I've tried to pick up since. That's changing now that I can use agentic coding tools like Claude Code to explain things as I go, and I've wired them into local models to cut down on token costs. But I still have to set things up on every new machine, and that gets tiresome.

Every fan curve I’ve built has the same blind spot: it knows how hot my PC is, but it has no idea what I’m about to do with it. For the average person, Google probably sits underneath half of the tools and workflows they use. The verbification of Google is a primary example: nobody says "use a search engine", we say "Google it". There's a term for when a brand becomes so popular that its name turns into an everyday word, it's called a proprietary eponym. And yes, I Googled that. All of this is hardly news, but it's still a little uncomfortable when you think about how much of your data sits in one place, and you don't even control it.

If you're as indecisive as me, then you're probably paying for more than one AI chatbot, and each one naturally ends up with its own job. Claude and ChatGPT both have desktop apps, so they get the quick stuff by default, and Gemini got whatever I remembered to open a tab for. Google has finally put out a Gemini app for Windows, though, and it got me wondering if a proper app could change which subscription earns its keep.

I have tried just about every popular note-taking app out there, and I couldn’t settle on a single solution. Google Keep was excellent for jotting down quick ideas. OneNote worked well for detailed notes, and Obsidian was my preferred choice for building a knowledge management base.
