Lowering graphics settings can sometimes hurt performance, but not how you’d expect
I'm sure most of you can agree that our first instinct whenever a game doesn't run as smoothly as expected is to open the graphics menu and start lowering settings. We've all done it at some point, and to be fair, that seems like the most logical solution. Switching from "Ultra" to "Medium" or "Low" can immediately reduce the workload on your GPU, which should translate into higher frame rates and smoother gameplay. In theory, that's exactly how performance scaling is supposed to work across games.
