If you want to feel truly invincible when driving in the snow, you need a set of studded snow tires. They're illegal in some places, typically restricted to the frigid months of the year in others. Spring for a set, though, and they'll see you through the worst, slipperiest, snowiest driving conditions you can imagine. They come at a pretty substantial cost, though, and I'm not just talking about a financial one. Yes, quality tires with embedded tungsten tips are generally far pricier than your average bargain rubber with snowflakes on the sidewall. The bigger issue, though, is that they can be extremely loud and are substantially worse for …Read the full story at The Verge.

Someone turned a broken Magic 8 Ball into a physics-based Raspberry Pi Pico fortune teller

Every DIY tinkerer knows that a broken device can always be repaired. The screen may be busted, the motherboard may be fried, and the audio ports may have been worn away after years of use, but if you have a soldering iron, a sense of adventure, and a ton of patience, you can always restore a device to how it was (or, at least, as close as possible).

"I'm pleased to report to you that Apple's back on track." It was May of 1998, and Steve Jobs was about 10 months into his second stint leading the company he'd cofounded more than two decades earlier. I gave Claude access to my calendar, notes, and file system, and my morning routine hasn’t been the same

Nvidia’s biggest advantage against AMD isn’t raster or ray-tracing, it’s everything else around the card

Linus Torvalds says Linux 7.0’s calm was a mirage as rc6 refuses to settle down

A week ago, all seemed well on the Linux 7.0 front. While the first few release candidates were looking a little spotty in terms of bugs, the fifth release candidate finally calmed down, and Linus Torvald himself said that the operating system was looking better.

I replaced my entire workflow with Claude Code, and I’m not even a developer

I have to admit, I slept on Claude at first, and that was a mistake. I was already using several other AI tools and just didn't see the need to further complicate my stack. Perplexity for research tied to a local LLM for summarization, and I didn't see the need for more chefs in the kitchen. Except, I should have fired them all and moved over to Claude Code, because it's far more versatile and powerful for the workflow I use for ideation and research.

I built a DIY automation keypad for under $20, and it replaced three devices on my desk

Looking at your desk right now, you probably have a stream deck for shortcuts, a dedicated number pad that you rarely use, and a bulky volume knob. The issue with commercial control centers is that they are expensive, often coming in at over $150 and locking you into proprietary, resource-heavy software. You can easily fall victim to picking up multiple devices that you simply just don't need. However, by spending less than $20 on a few choice parts from AliExpress or Amazon, you can build a 6-key dual encoder keypad that does the job of all the devices I've named above with zero background CPU usage.

I revived my old Android phone by turning it into a better voice a**istant than any smart speaker I’ve owned

Aside from its solid compatibility with smart devices, Home Assistant has several tricks up its sleeve.
