I replaced NotebookLM with a local LLM, and the difference is night and day

NotebookLM is genuinely one of the better AI tools I use, and I’ve been on it long enough to have a real opinion on it. The way it stays grounded in your sources, the citation behavior, the interactive mind maps are all some of the most useful features in my workflow - nothing else does what it does at the same level, and it’s free, which always matters.

Your old Nintendo 64 games are finally getting unofficial PC ports, and they run better than emulators

If you want to play an N64 game on your PC, you've almost certainly used an emulator at some point. Project64, mupen64plus, or maybe the N64 core in RetroArch. You drop in a ROM, the emulator reproduces the N64's CPU, graphics, audio, and coprocessor behavior well enough for the game...
If you want to play an N64 game on your PC, you've almost certainly used an emulator at some point. Project64, mupen64plus, or maybe the N64 core in RetroArch. You drop in a ROM, the emulator reproduces the N64's CPU, graphics, audio, and coprocessor behavior well enough for the game to run, and it just works. It's been the standard approach for decades, and for most people, it's still the obvious one.

The US Department of Justice has once again indicted James Comey - this time, for an alleged threat the former FBI director made toward President Donald Trump on Instagram, as reported earlier by CNN. In its indictment, filed in a North Carolina federal court on Tuesday, the DOJ cites the now-deleted image Comey posted to Instagram last May, which showed a seashell arrangement making up the numbers "8647."The DOJ claims "a reasonable recipient who is familiar with the circumstances would interpret as a serious expression of an intent to do harm." The phrase "eighty-six" can be used as slang that means to "get rid of" or "throw out," accord …Read the full story at The Verge.

Every AI code editor wants to replace VS Code, but the smartest ones are just extending it

VS Code is probably the most widely used code editor out there, though I am not sure it is even fair to call it just a code editor anymore. It has become the center of gravity for a lot of developers, and its extension model is the reason so many...
VS Code is probably the most widely used code editor out there, though I am not sure it is even fair to call it just a code editor anymore. It has become the center of gravity for a lot of developers, and its extension model is the reason so many workflows end up living inside it rather than around it. Extensions can plug directly into the UI and use the same APIs that VS Code itself uses, which makes the editor feel less like a fixed product and more like a platform.

YouTube CEO Neal Mohan announced Tuesday that YouTube TV is getting "fully customizable" multiview. Users have "full control to mix and match live streams" and can "build the personalized viewing experience you've been asking for," Mohan says. You can pin up to four streams in your multiview window. YouTube initially introduced multiview in a more limited form in 2023 as a way to watch preselected streams of sports content like March Madness, and soon after expanded it to preselected streams on topics like news, business, and weather programming. Last year, YouTube rolled out an experiment letting users build their own multiviews with "sel …Read the full story at The Verge.

IPS monitors promise no burn-in, but they’re hiding bigger problems that you can’t ignore anymore

OLED displays may be more affordable than ever in 2026, but many users are still wary of investing in one due to burn-in concerns. This is why they prefer IPS monitors, thanks to a great combination of image quality, response time, and refresh rates. I can understand the hesitation in buying a monitor that degrades over time, but the practical OLED experience has transformed over the last few years. Burn-in protection is robust, text clarity is better than ever, and even the brightness levels have caught up. On the flip side, IPS displays are still plagued by the age-old issues of IPS glow, poor contrast ratio, and subpar local dimming. These problems might have been tolerable in the past, but in 2026, they're inexcusable. OLED monitors are better in almost every aspect, and with the current pricing, even the OLED premium argument falls flat.

On the stand, Elon Musk is positioning himself as a savior. In the high-profile trial between him and his fellow OpenAI co-founder, now CEO, Sam Altman, Musk opened by going through his background. He went as far back as being raised in South Africa and arriving in Canada for college with "2,500 in Canadian travelers' checks and a bag of clothes and books," then spent an unusually long time talking about his past, from Zip2 to PayPal to the current, more familiar slate of companies he now runs. Why is Musk giving the jury so much of his origin story? Though he may be, depending on the day, the world's wealthiest individual, Musk suggested …Read the full story at The Verge.

Let's say you purchased one six months ago and you've got 2.5 Gbps fiber, so realistically, you've got all of the latest tech, yet somehow 49 out of your 50 devices are still showing Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6e in their signal properties. The only things actually using the Wi-Fi 7 protocol are your Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra or your Pixel 10 Pro. Your $3,000 MacBook Pro, your Smart TV, and your entire IoT fleet are completely oblivious to the 320 MHz channels they're sitting on.

The trademark applications, filed by TAS Rights Management on behalf of Swift, include audio clips of Swift saying the two phrases as part of a promotion for her latest album.
