7 DIY smart home projects from Maker Faire you won’t find at Best Buy

After a few days at Maker Faire Shenzhen, it's hard not to rethink what a "smart home" can be. After a few days at Maker Faire Shenzhen, it's hard not to rethink what a "smart home" can be. The event is packed with projects that aren't just flashy prototypes, but are instead thoughtful, working solutions built by people who care about reliability, privacy, and efficiency. Some of the ideas I saw there could easily fit into my own setup, and a few might even replace things I already rely on. Between DIY projects, open-source hardware, and genuinely clever problem-solving, I came away with a list of ideas that feel more inventive, and more practical, than anything coming out of the big smart-home brands right now.

NVMe drives are cheaper, faster, and better for your PC than a SATA SSD

If you're someone who's finally switching from a mechanical hard drive to an SSD, that's great news. You're making one of the best upgrades you'll ever make to your PC. However, you might be confused between SATA and NVMe SSDs on the market. While virtually any SSD will be significantly...
If you're someone who's finally switching from a mechanical hard drive to an SSD, that's great news. You're making one of the best upgrades you'll ever make to your PC. However, you might be confused between SATA and NVMe SSDs on the market. While virtually any SSD will be significantly faster than your old hard drive, buying an NVMe drive will be better for your PC in multiple ways. The newer storage interface not only leverages your other hardware a lot better, but the enhanced performance can actually benefit some real-world workloads. The price isn't a differentiator between SATA and NVMe SSDs anymore, so there's no reason to pick the older format over the newer one.

I used an immutable Linux distro for a week, and it was weirdly great

A little while ago, I gave Fedora Silverblue a try, and it felt really futuristic. By that, I mean that it was my first taste of what an "immutable" desktop is. Right now, operating systems like Windows, macOS, and most Linux distros are "mutable," meaning you can modify the system...
A little while ago, I gave Fedora Silverblue a try, and it felt really futuristic. By that, I mean that it was my first taste of what an "immutable" desktop is. Right now, operating systems like Windows, macOS, and most Linux distros are "mutable," meaning you can modify the system files and install apps like "normal." Fedora wants to make its operating systems "immutable," meaning that all the system files are read-only, meaning you can't install apps; they live "outside" the OS's files.

Windows 11 gamers regain up to 65% lost performance after Nvidia’s latest driver hotfix

When I report on gamers noticing an increase in their system's performance, it's usually because a new piece of tech has arrived that lets them render their games better. However, this time around, things are a little different. The latest Nvidia hotfix driver has improved people's in-game performance by up...
When I report on gamers noticing an increase in their system's performance, it's usually because a new piece of tech has arrived that lets them render their games better. However, this time around, things are a little different. The latest Nvidia hotfix driver has improved people's in-game performance by up to 65%, but I wouldn't say it was an FPS boost, per se. In fact, it'd probably be more accurate to call it an FPS "reclamation," weirdly enough.

I love my Synology NAS, but the company has lost my trust

I used to be the guy who recommended Synology to everyone even when I didn't need a NAS myself. In the years since its inception, the brand cemented its reputation, making it a blind buy and a favorite on r/selfhosted and r/HomeNAS. It was just as great for a small...
I used to be the guy who recommended Synology to everyone even when I didn't need a NAS myself. In the years since its inception, the brand cemented its reputation, making it a blind buy and a favorite on r/selfhosted and r/HomeNAS. It was just as great for a small business owner terrified of ransomware and a dad wanting to back up a decade of family photos. But today, a lot has changed, and I've finally picked a side where the grass is greener after being on the fence for a while.

These 4 Home a**istant automations will make your home feel smarter than any Alexa routine

Amazon’s Alexa Routines are sufficient for most people who want to set up and forget, including yours truly. Initially, it is fun to use voice commands or conditional triggers to turn off a light or an appliance. However, as your usage patterns evolve, you’ll gradually start noticing the limitations in the logic of these smart routines. That was my “lightbulb” moment when I tried Home Assistant for the first time.

I finally added NotebookLM to my freelance productivity stack, and I should have done it sooner

I'm going to be honest: my previous freelance workflow was a secret mess. I thought my method of spreading client files across various platforms and digital spaces was "organized," but in reality, I was just accumulating digital clutter. I'm going to be honest: my previous freelance workflow was a secret mess. I thought my method of spreading client files across various platforms and digital spaces was "organized," but in reality, I was just accumulating digital clutter. I was chasing down forgotten details and losing significant energy to administrative fatigue. I had heard the buzz about Google's NotebookLM, but I was skeptical.

Shocker: Elon Musk spends a lot of time on X posting bad political takes

NBC News's David Ingram analyzed a month's worth of Elon Musk's X posts (our condolences). While what he was able to glean wasn't too surprising, it was still interesting to see the numbers all laid out. Between September 17th and October 17th, he posted 1,716 times, averaging a little over...
NBC News's David Ingram analyzed a month's worth of Elon Musk's X posts (our condolences). While what he was able to glean wasn't too surprising, it was still interesting to see the numbers all laid out. Between September 17th and October 17th, he posted 1,716 times, averaging a little over 55 posts a day. 49 percent of those were about politics, usually fringe. He seems particularly hung up on the race of people on TV and in movies, including going after child actors.Other things Elon likes to talk about? Crime, Tesla - oh, and of course, himself. Over the 30 days, Elon posted about himself 109 times. He often even reposts his own stan ac …Read the full story at The Verge.

I tested this minimalist Todoist alternative — and it made me actually finish my tasks

I've spent the better part of a decade testing different task management systems. Custom filters in Todoist. Color-coded priority levels. Projects nested three layers deep. For some, I thought I had it all figured out except for the part where I actually finished things.

The one PC component I’ve blacklisted from my future builds

Out of all the PC components I've purchased for my last few builds, perhaps the most useless was the AIO liquid cooler I got for my current PC. I bought it purely for esthetics. My 65W Ryzen 7 5700X didn't really need liquid cooling, and the cooler didn't do a...
Out of all the PC components I've purchased for my last few builds, perhaps the most useless was the AIO liquid cooler I got for my current PC. I bought it purely for esthetics. My 65W Ryzen 7 5700X didn't really need liquid cooling, and the cooler didn't do a great job of cooling it anyway. If I can safely rule out a single component from each of my future builds, it would have to be an AIO. I know what kind of CPUs I'll pick in the future, and air coolers will easily tackle any of them.
