What Cronos: The New Dawn does better than the Silent Hill 2 Remake

Bloober Team's remake of one of the most popular psychological horror games of all time, Silent Hill 2, was largely a home run. The devs truly understood what the job required, and they stuck to the roots of the original game, delivering a modern remake that genuinely became the definitive way to experience James Sunderland's story. One year later, Bloober Team had an even more unenviable task that came with significantly more pressure — releasing their own, brand-new horror IP.

6 ways my NAS became the best backup system for every device I own

It’s a nerd’s dream to have all sorts of devices at home, and I can say that my home is definitely leaning that way. My family isn’t locked to one single ecosystem — we have a MacBook, Windows machines, Android flagships, and iPhones. This varied mix is quite liberating, giving...
It’s a nerd’s dream to have all sorts of devices at home, and I can say that my home is definitely leaning that way. My family isn’t locked to one single ecosystem — we have a MacBook, Windows machines, Android flagships, and iPhones. This varied mix is quite liberating, giving everyone the freedom to go about the way they prefer. However, that’s also a bit of a headache for me since, instead of replicating a single workflow on all the devices, I have to create separate ones for every device make.

This local AI agent running on a Raspberry Pi 5 is the perfect smart home addition

Squeezing an AI onto a Raspberry Pi is an interesting feat. In an ideal world, the Pi comes with enough hardware to run any model you throw at it, but the truth is, it's quite limited as to what it can do. In fact, someone created an art project that illustrates just how limited it can be. Of course, the Raspberry Pi community, being the tinkerers they are, saw this as a challenge rather than a limitation and got to work creating lighter versions of AI models that can run on the SBC. It's not as lightning-fast as ChatGPT or an NPU-hosted model, but it can still do the job.

The UK currently has no citizen ID or legal requirements to carry identification. The United Kingdom is introducing a national digital ID scheme in an effort to crack down on illegal migrant workers. A government press release on Friday announced that the digital ID will be stored on mobile devices through the GOV.UK wallet app currently in development, and will be a mandatory requirement for adults to work in Britain by July 2029.“Digital ID is an enormous opportunity for the UK. It will make it tougher to work illegally in this country, making our borders more secure,” UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in the press release. “And it will also offer ordinary citizens countless benefits, like being able to prove your identity to access key services swiftly — rather than hunting around for an old utility bill.”The digital ID scheme isn’t finalized, and will need to go through parliamentary approval before it can be enforced. A public consultation will be launched by the UK government later this year to receive feedback regarding how the digital ID service will be delivered, according to the press release. The announcement has sparked privacy concerns from civil rights groups, with Big Brother Watch saying the scheme would “fundamentally change the nature of our relationship with the state and turn the UK into a ‘papers, please’ society.” A petition against the introduction of digital ID cards has also attracted more than 830,000 signatures at the time of writing, citing concerns around mass surveillance and digital control.Plans to introduce digital ID were announced in January, with the GOV.UK wallet app initially pitched to give UK citizens the option to digitize their driver’s licenses and make government-issued documents easier to access. The GOV.UK wallet app is still in development, and described as “entirely optional” on the government website. The new mandatory ID requirements and focus on illegal immigration come amid growing public concerns around migrant boat crossings and mounting pressure from the anti-immigration right-wing populist party Reform UK. The UK currently has no citizen ID card and does not legally require people to carry photo ID, such as passports or driver’s licenses. The EU is planning to introduce a similar Digital Identity Wallet next year for “European citizens, residents and businesses to prove who they are when accessing digital services” and a place to “safely store, share and sign important digital documents.”

6 ways I circumvent NotebookLM source limitations

AI tools have been integrated into nearly every digital workflow over the last few years, but I've found NotebookLM to be more resourceful than other AI tools. It's built for students learning through a chatbot UI that doesn't err or hallucinate as much as Gemini, but with the same logical aptitude chops. It is reliant entirely on the PDFs, text files, Google Docs, and web links I supply, and this simple constraint transforms it from a creative but unreliable chatbot into a focused, factual research partner, complete with inline citations pointing directly to the source material.

Windows 10 goes out with a whimper as its final non-security update clears up a few loose ends

Windows 10 will lose general support on October 14th, but that doesn't mean it will never see updates ever again. If you're signed up for the extended security program (or if you're in Europe), you can get another year of security-only updates. This is great for keeping Windows 10 usable...

If you're signed up for the extended security program (or if you're in Europe), you can get another year of security-only updates. This is great for keeping Windows 10 usable in the modern era, but it does mean the operating system will get no more security-critical bug fixes or new features.

While I expected the company to create its own hardware, it made sense for Microsoft to leverage the expertise that ROG already possessed. As such, we saw the first peek into the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X a little while ago, and it was shaping up to be a very interesting product at the time.

The best journaling app on your iPad is probably the one you already have (and it’s free)

One of the main things I use my iPad for is bullet journaling and planning. I’ve tried out a variety of journaling and note-taking apps on iPadOS over the years, but up until recently, the only one I stuck with was Notability. With iPadOS 26, which launched earlier this month,...

I’ve tried out a variety of journaling and note-taking apps on iPadOS over the years, but up until recently, the only one I stuck with was Notability. With iPadOS 26, which launched earlier this month, Notability has some new competition: Apple’s Journal app.

Meta is bringing its “pay or consent” ad model to the UK after months of wrangling with regulators over the controversial policy. The update will force Instagram and Facebook users to pick between being served up personalized ads or shelling out for monthly subscriptions to ad-free versions. Subscriptions start at £2.99 a month, around $4, for users logging in over the web, Meta said. Android and iOS users face steeper charges of £3.99 a month, around $5.33. Meta blames this on “the fees that Apple and Google charge.” It’s an all or nothing approach, with users forced to either subscribe on all accounts or none. Each additional account garners another fee of either £2 or £3 a month.Meta was forced to walk back a similar model in Europe after regulators there slammed the “binary choice” it offered users. Meta warned users they faced a “materially worse” experience as a result. The fees were significantly more expensive there than in the UK, starting at €9.99 per month when purchased on the web or €12.99 per month if purchased through Google’s or Apple’s app stores, around $11.67 and $15.17, respectively.

It was challenging for me to manage different wired and wireless devices on my home network. I had a tough time identifying a rogue device or bandwidth-guzzling culprit. Since I was still teething with VLANs, I decided to start small and only separate the devices without over-segmenting them. Also, I learned the hard way that well-structured firewall rules are crucial when using VLANs. To keep things simple for my home network, I have only segmented them into wired and wireless categories. Here are some reasons why I prefer my VLANs on separate wired devices from wireless ones.

Using multiple graphics cards was a means to get more from your gaming PC by linking the two components together and taking advantage of the increased bandwidth. Unfortunately, seeing more than one massive GPU inside a desktop system is largely a thing of the past, and you'll likely only witness this scenario with specific niche applications, be it video editing, cryptocurrency mining, or enthusiast use. But I found a way to use my old GPUs by installing them inside my Proxmox server and deploying Frigate and OpenWeb UI.
