The single best software upgrade I made to my PC wasn’t a productivity suite, it was a tiny free utility

When you are trying to keep a modern PC zippy on a relatively small drive, like my 256GB SSD on an HP Spectre or 512GB SSD on an AMD build, that terrifying ‘Low Disk Space’ notification is a constant threat to your PC’s performance.

Tesla Cybertruck sales are flatlining

After a brutal few months, Tesla sales are finally picking up thanks to expiring federal EV tax credits. But while customers are snatching up Model 3s and Ys, they are increasingly turning up their noses at the newest addition to Tesla’s lineup: the Cybertruck. Tesla only sold 5,385 Cybertrucks in the third quarter, down 63 percent compared to the same period in 2024, when the automaker delivered over 14,000. The company has sold a little more than 16,000 Cybertrucks so far in 2025 — a far cry from the 250,000 that Elon Musk once predicted would be sold annually. Tesla is now expected to deliver around 20,000 Cybertrucks this year, a steep drop from the estimated 50,000 sold in 2024. Tesla only sold 5,385 Cybertrucks in the third quarter, down 63 percent compared to the same period in 2024.The new data was published by Kelley Blue Book, and reported by Business Insider. Tesla doesn’t break out Cybertruck numbers specifically, instead lumping them in with its two older vehicles, the Model S and Model X, as “other models.”The third quarter was an otherwise banger for EV sales, with a total of 438,487 units sold. That’s up 40.7 percent from the previous quarter and higher by 29.6 percent year over year. Shoppers rushed to snatch up available EVs before the expiration of the $7,500 tax credit on September 30th. Sales are expected to drop dramatically in the fourth quarter — which could make the Cybertruck’s situation even worse. Other electric trucks haven’t fared as poorly as the Cybertruck. The Rivian R1T is up 13 percent this quarter year over year, while the Ford F-150 Lightning is up 39.7 percent, and GMC’s Hummer EV has increased sales 21.9 percent and Sierra EV by over 771 percent. And then there was the news that the families of two young people killed in a fiery Cybertruck crash are suing Tesla over faulty door handles they claim impeded their loved ones’ escape. Things have gotten so dire for the Cybertruck that Elon Musk has resorted to selling them to himself. As Electrek reports, Tesla has been delivering unsold Cybertrucks to Musk’s private companies, SpaceX and xAI. The trucks that are going to SpaceX are intended to replace the company’s fleet of internal-combustion engine vehicles, according to the site.

Dust is one of the biggest performance killers for any PC, not to mention the negative consequences for component lifespan due to elevated temperatures. This makes regular cleaning a key part of PC maintenance. Many users recommend deep-cleaning your PC once in six months or a year, but I haven't done it even once in the three years I've spent with my current PC. It's not that I don't have the time, or that it won't help; I just don't consider it worth the effort. My PC doesn't have any severe dust deposits, and performance hasn't dropped either. Besides, regular upkeep has allowed me to delay a deep clean indefinitely.

I just discovered my new favorite Vampire Survivors alternative

If you find yourself endlessly by Vampire Survivors, then you'll want to give Ball x Pit a look. Its title may be ridiculous, but this mashup of Vampire Survivors and Breakout, launching on October 15, is one of my favorite games of the year. Ever since I began playing it...
If you find yourself endlessly by Vampire Survivors, then you'll want to give Ball x Pit a look. Its title may be ridiculous, but this mashup of Vampire Survivors and Breakout, launching on October 15, is one of my favorite games of the year. Ever since I began playing it a couple of weeks ago, I've struggled to put the controller down and play games like Battlefield 6 and Ghost of Yotei instead.

I turned to NotebookLM to set up a self-hosted LLM — here’s how it went

I’ve always been a tad bit embarrassed admitting this, especially as someone who writes about tech for a living and is also majoring in computer science, but I have absolutely no idea how self-hosting works. Sure, I know what it means, but I've never really properly self-hosted anything before. Even...
I’ve always been a tad bit embarrassed admitting this, especially as someone who writes about tech for a living and is also majoring in computer science, but I have absolutely no idea how self-hosting works. Sure, I know what it means, but I've never really properly self-hosted anything before. Even when I have, I’ve just blindly followed a YouTube tutorial step by step, copying commands without really understanding what any of them did.

Google will let you hide sponsored results in search — after you’ve seen them

Ads in Google search results are getting a more prominent label, and a way to hide them if you’re not interested. Handy! The thing is, you still have to look at them first.Currently, Google labels paid results on search pages individually with a “sponsored” tag on each one. This change groups them all into a collapsable section at the top of the page with a single, larger label that remains in view as you scroll. At the bottom of the section you’ll see a button to hide sponsored results, so you’ll have to scroll by them first. Tap the button to hide them and they’ll remain collapsed under that sponsored heading; tapping again to show sponsored results unfurls them. Google says the update is rolling out now on both desktop and mobile. Over the years, Google has made its paid search results look more and more like organic results, with plenty of backlash along the way. The company shifted from labeling paid results as “ads” to “sponsored” around 2020. A cynical person might think that sounds friendlier to a generation of people accustomed to influencer sponcon. The company calls this latest update an effort to “make navigation even easier,” which, I guess. Wouldn’t it make navigation easier if I could hide sponsored results before I’ve scrolled past them? I think so! But there’s no way Google would jeopardize its bread and butter business like that.

Microsoft AI just announced its first text-to-image generator, MAI-Image-1, designed and developed in-house. The tech giant, which recently announced its first in-house Microsoft AI models, called the new image generator “the next step on our journey.”Microsoft says it sought feedback from creative professionals in order to avoid “repetitive or generically-stylized outputs.” MAI-Image-1 “excels” at photorealistic imagery like lightning, landscapes, and more, the company claims. And it can process requests and produce images faster than “larger, slower models.” The model has already secured a spot in the top 10 of LMArena, the AI benchmark site where humans compare outputs from different systems and vote on the best one.  MAI-Image-1 joins Microsoft’s other AI products, voice generator MAI-Voice-1 AI and chatbot MAI-1-preview. The company was an early funder of OpenAI, but the two companies’ relationship has grown increasingly complicated. Microsoft has also started to use Anthropic’s AI models for some features in Microsoft 365 recently, and is making “significant investments” in training its own AI models like MAI-Image-1.We haven’t had a chance to test Microsoft’s new image generator, but once we have we’ll report back on its safety guardrails. The company says it’s committed to “ensuring safe and responsible outcomes.”

The 10 greatest medieval fantasy games you need to play at least once

Meta wants you to find your next gig on Facebook. Meta, a company that is not shy about bolting new features onto its platforms, is bolting another new feature onto Facebook: jobs. This one is actually a throwback — Facebook initially introduced job postings in 2017, only to retire it less than five years later. But jobs are back now, with an emphasis toward local entry-level, service, and trade work.Job listings are featured in a tab in the Marketplace section of Facebook, but Meta says they may also be surfaced in relevant groups. Business pages can also post their own listings. Jobs are available only to those 18 and older, and must meet Facebook’s guidelines. There are a few obvious exclusions — no adult services or drugs — but in-person childcare is also off limits. That’s funny, because there’s at least one Facebook group in my neighborhood dedicated entirely to finding and hiring nannies.Scrolling through some of the job listings in Seattle, it looks like it’s being adopted so far as a digital version of hanging up a “Help Wanted” sign on the door of your restaurant or business. And it makes sense, because outside of Nextdoor, a lot of local connection happens through Facebook groups. It’s certainly my preferred platform when I want to find out why the county sheriff’s helicopter is circling the neighborhood on a Tuesday afternoon. This update actually marks a return for jobs on Facebook. The company first introduced job listings in 2017 in the US and Canada, expanding to more than 40 countries in 2018. In 2022, Facebook reverted to supporting only the US and Canada, and finally shut down the program in 2023. The platform still allowed people to post listings in the form of ads — which didn’t go great for Facebook when organizations advertising jobs used targeting to exclude groups based on gender and religious background from seeing them. This conduct is prohibited by the discrimination policy that applies to anyone using the new job posting tool, thankfully. Facebook’s re-launched jobs feature is available starting today, and only in the US.
