I'm sure most of you already know that modern CPUs run hot out of the box. In recent years, both Intel and AMD have pushed their chips closer to their thermal and power limits than ever before. That's why it's not unusual to see temperatures hovering in the high 70s or 80s while gaming, even with a high-end 360mm AIO cooler. Most people think that's a problem, as if their cooler isn't good enough, or they just got unlucky with the silicon lottery, but that's not usually the case.

Linux, no matter which flavor you choose, is so great for running services on because of its robustness. You can run as heavy or as light as you want, with or without a desktop interface, but whether it's a small home lab or a collection of Proxmox containers, keeping track of which systems are up-to-date can be an overwhelming managerial task. Traditional home lab dashboards like Grefana or Dashy are great, but if the goal is to simply tell what is out-of-date and patch it quickly, PatchMon is what you're looking for.

The US is also a signatory to the international treaty banning nuclear weapons tests, though has not ratified it.

The recent news of Qualcomm acquiring Arduino has stirred both excitement and unease in the maker and open-source hardware communities. Reports suggest that Arduino will retain its brand, tools, and mission under the deal and will continue to support chips from multiple manufacturers. Even so, the move raises several concerns about the future of Arduino, especially for hobbyists, educators, and smaller developers. Here are five reasons why I’m personally worried about this acquisition, based on what’s been shared publicly so far.

Usually, a motherboard upgrade usually means an upgrade of the CPU, along with the usual improvements of moving to a newer platform: faster memory support, more expansion slots available, maybe even better I/O. One of the biggest features I didn't expect to love so much wasn't performance-related at all, but rather, a mechanical quality-of-life feature that I never knew I would care about: tool-less mechanisms for installing hardware on the board.

They feature an AirPods-style design, complete with an elongated stem that provides a secure, stable in-ear fit. They also offer an IP57 rating and about six hours of battery life with active noise cancellation enabled. They’re comfortable to wear over extended periods of time, too, and in his review, former Verge reviewer Chris Welch noted how his ears never felt fatigued after wearing them all day.Samsung’s third-gen earbuds improve upon the sound of the prior model, too, which was already great. They deliver full, detailed sound, with an emphasis on bass and treble. If you spend a lot of time chatting with family or in work meetings, call performance is also quite good. However, perhaps the most impressive feature is their voice control performance. You merely need to say “volume up” or “next song” and the earbuds will execute that command through your phone — no wake phrase required.As much as we like the Buds 3 Pro, they’re not perfect. They lack true multipoint connectivity, though they can auto-switch between Galaxy laptops, tablets, and phones. Meanwhile, the ANC performance falls short of what you get from the AirPods Pro 3 or even the second-gen model. Setting up a Raspberry Pi can be as straightforward or as complicated as you make it. Most people flash an SD card, plug it in, and call it a day. That works fine for hobbyists, but it becomes frustrating once you start running several devices or need to rebuild them often. After replacing and reinstalling too many cards, I started looking for something better.

When you buy the $799 Meta Ray-Ban Display, you aren’t just getting a pair of smart glasses: you’re also getting Meta’s Neural Band, a small wristband that you use to control what’s on the glasses’ display. It’s an essential part of the product.But, if by some unfortunate circumstance, you need to buy a replacement for the wristband, it’s been unclear how you would do that. The wristband isn’t listed for sale online. One buyer told The Verge that Meta’s customer service said it wasn’t possible to purchase a replacement. That led us to reach out to Meta just to make sure — it was hard to believe that the only solution to a lost Neural Band would be buying an entirely new pair of the smart glasses. It turns out that Meta actually will let you buy a new Neural Band if you contact customer service, but it’ll cost $199, making for a pretty expensive replacement. Only customers who have already purchased the Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses and need a band replacement that’s outside of Meta’s limited warranty policy will be able to buy the wristband on its own, according to Meta’s Tyler Yee. If you fall under those requirements, you can reach out to Meta’s customer support to make your case.

Self-hosting your own services may seem like a chore, but it’s worth the hassle when cloud platforms and online applications inch closer to intrusive, subscription-based models with each passing day. While they’re often associated with home labs and server-grade equipment, you don’t need powerful systems or a lot of technical know-how to run services on local hardware.
