GE’s nugget ice maker is simple to set up. | Photo by Jennifer Pattison Tuohy / The Verge If you’re looking for ways to make staying cool and hydrated easier this summer, Woot is currently selling a refurbished GE Profile Opal 2.0 Ultra Nugget Ice Maker for $264.99 through June 3rd. That’s $184 less than buying new at its full price, and comes with a 90-day warranty. If you want a brand new model, it’s also on sale for $359 ($90) at Best Buy, or $449 ($50 off) with a side tank included (Amazon, Best Buy,  GE).GE Profile Opal 2.0 UltraWhere to Buy: $449 $264.99 at Woot (Refurbished) $449.99 $359.99 at Best Buy $499 $449 at Amazon (with side tank)If you’re unfamiliar with nugget ice, it’s the soft, chewable ice that cools drinks quickly and  doesn’t melt as fast as crushed ice. In the week she spent testing it, my colleague Jennifer Pattison Tuohy said the countertop appliance quickly became her family’s “favorite kitchen gadget,” making drinks taste better and even encouraging her kids to stay hydrated. It’s simple to use and makes ice quickly, churning out up to 38 pounds of chewable nugget ice per day. Setup is relatively simple, too, as it doesn’t require plumbing. The machine also supports Wi-Fi, allowing you to schedule ice production or control it with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. While the ice maker does require a lot of maintenance, GE also added some upgrades aimed at making it slightly easier, including a scale-inhibiting water filter, a reusable air filter, and built-in alerts that let you know when it’s time to sanitize or descale. There’s also a touch display for checking status and connecting to Wi-Fi, along with a stainless steel scoop and a magnetic scoop holder.Read our GE Profile Opal 2.0 Ultra Nugget Ice Maker review.

Google Health is here, but a lot of people want their Fitbit app back instead

The Fitbit app is no more. Along with the launch of the new Fitbit Air (which you can expect a full review of once we've spent more time with it), Google has officially replaced it with Google Health, as previously announced, and many of the responses we've seen so far are full of confusion, frustration, and requests to get the old app back. One post on Reddit calls out a common issue, saying, "I can't even completely fill up my home screen. They only have 2 large tiles available and I can't just scroll down to see everything." The landing page has a small section up top showing steps and some other basic stats, but part of the app's main …Read the full story at The Verge.

We knew it was coming for a while now. While the Nvidia Control Panel had enjoyed years of giving gamers driver updates and customisation over how the GPU works, we saw the first glimpses of the Nvidia App. It was pitched as the successor to the Control Panel, and while it wasn't quite ready to supercede it on release, Nvidia slowly began moving features over to the App.

The Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons, an international forum that focuses on lethal autonomous systems, is hosted twice a year at the United Nations in Geneva. When Branka Marijan attended in November 2017, she thought the five-day sessions - which dealt largely in hypotheticals, speculating on a world where warfare was fought with killer robots - would be business as usual. After all, this was technology some thought might never be developed, and likely never deployed. That year, she quickly realized, was different. That distant, imagined future was suddenly closer and realer than ever.On the first day, some attendees watched a …Read the full story at The Verge.

I built my own Synology alternative, and the hardest part was accepting how good DSM still is

Synology network-attached storage (NAS) enclosures are among the best in the business, thanks in part to the operating system running on the turnkey devices. Synology network-attached storage (NAS) enclosures are among the best in the business, thanks in part to the operating system running on the turnkey devices. Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) is one of my favorite prebuilt NAS systems, as well as a shortlisted pick for best overall NAS OS. It's absolutely brilliant for most people using NAS. While not perfect, often limiting enthusiasts and those seeking more advanced functionality, it's ideal for beginners and those who simply wish to use their NAS to store some files and run a package or two. I have since moved my primary NAS to a custom DIY system, but I miss how amazing DSM still is.

Sony’s sloppy Spider-Man universe gets even messier with Spider-Noir

After years of it seeming like the Spider-Man film rights might be better off in Marvel's hands alone, Into the Spider-Verse came along and proved that Sony was still capable of telling phenomenal stories featuring everyone's favorite webhead. Into the Spider-Verse's sumptuous visuals and focus on a different web-slinging New...
After years of it seeming like the Spider-Man film rights might be better off in Marvel's hands alone, Into the Spider-Verse came along and proved that Sony was still capable of telling phenomenal stories featuring everyone's favorite webhead. Into the Spider-Verse's sumptuous visuals and focus on a different web-slinging New Yorker made it unlike any other Spider-Man adaptation. And it was genuinely shocking to see Sony follow the film up with a bigger, bolder, more imaginative sequel just a few years later.Part of what made the first two Spider-Verse features so much fun to watch was the way they cleverly incorporated many of the lesser- …Read the full story at The Verge.

Your old PC doesn’t need a new motherboard, just a $15 adapter and a faster drive

You might have a solid, older desktop PC that handles tasks decently, but your storage needs are growing, and modern games and apps demand significantly faster speeds than old SSDs can provide you with. When looking down at your motherboard, you realize the nightmare: there are zero M.2 slots on...
You might have a solid, older desktop PC that handles tasks decently, but your storage needs are growing, and modern games and apps demand significantly faster speeds than old SSDs can provide you with. When looking down at your motherboard, you realize the nightmare: there are zero M.2 slots on the board, or the single M.2 slot you do have is locked to slow PCIe 2.0 speeds, which are barely faster than SATA drives.

I changed these settings on my ISP gateway and my network finally works like it should

Home networking can be complicated, especially for the average non-tech-inclined person. As a result, ISPs provide gateway combo units that combine the functions of a router and modem into one box. These boxes typically ship with default settings designed to get the user onboarded and online as quickly and painlessly as possible, and while that's great for them, it results in a network that's running in a less than optimal way. Your network performance, security, and reliability can all be improved by changing just a handful of settings.

After self-hosting LLMs for a year, I realized that models are not the real bottleneck

Running self-hosted LLMs can easily turn into an endless upgrade cycle. One week you are testing new quants, the next week you are comparing benchmarks, context lengths, and VRAM usage, all hoping the next model will finally make your setup feel reliable. I went through the exact same phase. Every...

One week you are testing new quants, the next week you are comparing benchmarks, context lengths, and VRAM usage, all hoping the next model will finally make your setup feel reliable. I went through the exact same phase. Every problem felt like a hardware or model-quality problem waiting to be solved with a bigger download.

Claude Code is the best AI coding tool I’ve used, and I’m not entirely sure if I can recommend it

There was once a time when you'd only hear "technical people" in the traditional sense talk about coding or building stuff. There was once a time when you'd only hear "technical people" in the traditional sense talk about coding or building stuff. No-code building tools always lingered around, but compared to what we have now, the tools that existed back then were simply toys. Now, even the most non-technical person you might have around is constantly talking about the app they're "vibe coding" on the weekend, the SaaS they're spinning up with Cursor, or the side project they finally shipped because an LLM wrote 90% of it for them.
