The full Pod 5 Ultra setup starts from $6,099.Eight Sleep is launching the Pod 5, the fifth generation of its expensive smart sleeping system. It packs two main upgrades: a temperature-controlled blanket and speakers that can play “soothing soundscapes.”The Pod 5 builds on top of Eight Sleep’s existing tech, shipping with the same temperature controlled mattress cover and height-adjustable base that Eight Sleep says helps to reduce snoring. The new blanket complements the cover by syncing up with it, delivering the same water-powered cooling and warming range of 55 to 110 Fahrenheit, but now from all around you. Just like the existing cover, you can set different temperatures on each side of the bed to avoid midnight squabbles.The other big addition is a set of surround-sound speakers integrated into the updated base. Eight Sleep has worked with neuroscientist and podcaster Andrew Huberman on a set of Non-Sleep Deep Rest (NSDR) guided meditations “for achieving deep relaxation and restorative states.” There’s also a selection of white noise and other calming sounds, which can be set to turn off once you fall asleep, or keep playing all night if you prefer. Eight Sleep is also improving the Pod’s health tracking with Health Check, a new report in the Eight Sleep app. It monitors users’ heart rate and breathing during sleep, and “AI-powered algorithms” will flag any issues in the morning.My colleague Victoria Song tested out Eight Sleep’s Pod 4 Ultra last year and apparently had the best sleep of her life. That would be great, if it didn’t come at such a high price: the Pod 5 starts at $2,849 for a full size Core model that only includes the mattress cover and a hub to power it. The price jumps to $4,099 to add on the blanket, and $6,099 for the adjustable base and speakers, and there’s a mandatory subscription too, which starts at $199 per year.

Everyone knows that great TV or movie adaptations of games are very few and far between. The "Resident Evil" movies have burned us, the "DOOM" movie, both the "Hitman" movies, and many others. I could spend an hour listing them down. On the other end of the spectrum are some great TV or film adaptations that come from video games — HBO’s The Last of Us, Netflix’s "Castlevania," and Amazon’s "Fallout."

Toyota confirmed today that the all-electric C-HR, previously only available in Europe, will arrive in the US next year. You might recall the C-HR as the gas-powered compact crossover sold in the US from 2018-2022. But now it has been resurrected as a battery electric vehicle with an estimated driving range of up to 290 miles. No pricing information has been released, but I expect we’ll get more clarity closer to the release date.In the US, the C-HR will only have one battery option with 77 kWh of capacity. Interestingly, that pack only offers 290 miles, while the European version with the same battery purports gets up to 373 miles of range. This is due to Toyota relying on the more generous EU-based WLTP standard. The European spec, which goes by the moniker C-HR Plus, offers an additional choice of a 57.7 kWh battery with around 283 miles of range. Toyota says it also plans on releasing a variety of powertrain options for the C-HR, including hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and hydrogen fuel cell (only available in California and Hawaii).The C-HR isn’t a hot hatch by any stretch of the imagination, but it has enough mustard under its hood to put a smile on your face. The compact EV will put out 338 horsepower and an estimated 0-60 mph time of five seconds.Much like the recently refreshed bZ SUV, the Toyota C-HR will come with a factory-installed North American Charging Standard port, so it can access thousands of Tesla Supercharger stations without needing an adapter. When plugged in at a DC fast-charging station, the EV’s battery will gain 10-80 percent in “around 30 minutes under ideal conditions,” Toyota says. It also has Plug and Charge capability, meaning drivers can plug into a third-party charging station without needing to download an app or enter payment information.There’s lots more to like, including ample cargo space (25.4 cubic feet), four levels of regenerative braking including paddle shifters, 18- and 20-inch wheel options, and a 14-inch center touchscreen that supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.The only remaining question is the price. The original gas-engine version started at $22,000, while the hybrid model sells for around $41,000. So I would expect the BEV version to kick things off somewhere north of $45,000, given the current state of battery costs.

The announcements come as Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang joined President Trump in Saudi Arabia this week to solicit AI investments for US companies.The US Department of Commerce (DOC) announced on Monday that it has rescinded the Artificial Intelligence Diffusion Rule, due to take effect on May 15th, that aimed to restrict how many US-made AI chips could be sent to international markets without special government approval. The DOC said that a replacement rule for protecting US AI technology will be issued “in the future,” but provided no specific details.“These new requirements would have stifled American innovation and saddled companies with burdensome new regulatory requirements,” The DOC said in a statement. “The AI Diffusion Rule also would have undermined US diplomatic relations with dozens of countries by downgrading them to second-tier status.”While the goal was to prevent countries already subject to chip restrictions, such as Russia and China, from accessing or building AI tech, it also placed Nvidia’s estimated 90 percent share of the AI chip market in jeopardy. Shortly after the Diffusion Rule was introduced by former President Joe Biden in January, Nvidia issued a statement calling it “misguided,” while anticipating a return to Trump’s first term policies “that strengthen American leadership, bolster our economy and preserve our competitive edge in AI and beyond.”The DOC also warned companies that using Huawei’s Ascend AI chipset “anywhere in the world” would violate US export control agreements. Huawei’s home-grown Ascend processors are seen as China’s best answer to Nvidia’s powerful AI chips. Nvidia’s Huang was notably one of the only US tech leaders to not attend Donald Trump’s inauguration. His absence doesn’t appear to have soured the relationship between them, however, with Huang spotted cosying up to Trump at a US-Saudi investment summit in Riyadh on Tuesday, alongside other tech leaders like Elon Musk, AMD’s Lisa Su, OpenAI’s Sam Altman, and Epic CEO Tim Sweeney.The Washington Post reports that Trump was far from subtle about what the US wanted from the gathering. “As you know, we have the biggest business leaders in the world here,” he told  Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. “They’re going to walk away with a lot of checks for a lot of things that you’re going to provide.”

Sony’s $699.99 PS5 Pro could get especially expensive if prices go up.Sony just announced its financial forecast for the next year, and it’s expecting to be impacted by tariffs to the tune of 100 billion yen (about $680 million). To compensate, the company says it’s considering options including moving manufacturing to the US and increasing prices for consumers.Speaking to investors during the company’s earnings call, Sony CFO Lin Tao confirmed that the company is considering “passing on” the price of tariffs to consumers in order to mitigate the impact on its bottom line. Tao didn’t mention the PS5 by name though, and it’s possible that Sony could try to protect pricing on its console through increases elsewhere in its electronics business. Sony has already increased the price of the PS5 this year, but only in the UK, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.The PS5 did get a call out from CEO Hiroki Totoki when discussing the possibility of moving manufacturing to the US to avoid the brunt of Donald Trump’s tariffs. He admitted that the console “can be produced locally,” and that it would be “an efficient strategy” that “has to be considered going forward.”As expected Sony is considering passing along the tarrif impact by increasing the price of their products. Sony still manufactures the majority of its PS5 hardware in China, and so its gaming business is especially at risk right now. Even after the 90-day pause and reduction in rates announced this week, the 30 percent tariff on imports into the US from China is substantially higher than the 10 percent rate levied on other countries, and games consoles were not included in the exemptions for select other electronics. Microsoft has already raised the price of its Xbox consoles by up to $100, though Nintendo has so far elected to keep Switch 2 pricing the same ahead of its launch next month.We may learn more about Sony’s pricing plans going forward when it announces the flagship WH-1000XM6 headphones tomorrow, which succeed the $399 XM5s.

Within hours the post had been updated and “Super Mario World” removed, along with mentions of Shrek and Minions movies.The title makes some sense. The first film’s post-credit scene teased the arrival of Mario’s bright green dinosaur steed / friend Yoshi, who made his videogame debut in… Super Mario World, which launched on the SNES in 1990. It was the console’s most popular game, selling more than 20 million copies. The upcoming sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie was announced in March 2024, with a launch planned for April 3rd, 2026, and directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic returning to lead the production. A sequel came as no big surprise after the first film brought in over $1 billion worldwide. Nintendo took that as a green light to ramp up its entertainment efforts, with a live-action Legend of Zelda movie also in the works and due to release in March 2027.
