When Microsoft first announced its Recall feature, it stirred up quite a bit of controversy. Well, okay, people still feel really uneasy about it, and for good reason; the system takes snapshots of your current screens, scans them for data, and then stores the information to recall later on. The idea is that you can then use Copilot to ask questions about your past session usage, and it can go through the logs and dig up relevant details about what you're asking.

The indie-focused open gaming marketplace Itch.io has abruptly deindexed adult content from its browse and search pages, warning that some games will be permanently removed from the platform. In a blog post on Thursday, Itch.io creator Leaf Corcoran said that the update was due to concerns that the website’s payment processors had “about the nature of certain content” hosted on the platform, following similar scrutiny against Steam.“Our ability to process payments is critical for every creator on our platform,” said Corcoran. “To ensure that we can continue to operate and provide a marketplace for all developers, we must prioritize our relationship with our payment partners and take immediate steps towards compliance.”While Itch.io hosts a variety of gaming content, adult and pornographic titles are often among the top-sellers on the platform. Content creators who host their work on Itch.io were given no warning ahead of the decision. “We know this is not ideal, and we apologize for the abruptness of this change,” said Corcoran. It’s unclear if customers are currently able to access games and visual novels that they had paid for prior to the update. We’ve reached out to Itch.io for clarification.Credit card companies like Visa and Mastercard have rules that restrict some kinds of illegal and NSFW content. Steam similarly purged some adult titles last week after quietly changing its policy guidelines to ban any content that might violate rules set by the platform’s payment providers and card networks. Backlash against both gaming platforms online has likened the situation to Tumblr banning pornographic content in 2018, a decision that Matt Mullenweg, CEO of Tumblr’s parent company, Automattic, attributed to pressure from credit card companies, and is widely believed to have driven many users away from the platform. Itch.io has yet to provide full guidance for creators that outlines the content that will be permitted on the platform following this change, but notes that creators will be required to confirm that their NSFW content abides by any rules set by their account’s payment processors. That is, of course, providing that this doesn’t cause a Tumblr-esque mass exodus of users who may now be looking for an alternative service to host, sell, and buy NSFW games.“We are currently conducting a comprehensive audit of content to ensure we can meet the requirements of our payment processors,” said Corcoran. “Pages will remain deindexed as we complete our review. Once this review is complete, we will introduce new compliance measures.”

It's been a long while since Nintendo released a new 3D Donkey Kong adventure. The most recent outing for everyone's favorite tie-wearing ape on the Nintendo Switch was a nod back to the Donkey Kong Country series and its 2D gameplay roots. But for as good as those games were on the Switch, many Nintendo fans were craving a 3D platformer in the same spirit as Donkey Kong 64. With a little help from the same team that made Super Mario Odyssey on the Switch, Donkey Kong finally has a brand-new title with Donkey Kong Bananza that takes advantage of everything in the third-dimension, and just smashes it. And not figuratively, he quite literally smashes through everything.

Not long ago, President Donald Trump hadn’t even heard of Nvidia, the most valuable tech company in the world. But once he found out about the AI chip giant, he says, he wanted to break it up.“Before I learned the facts of life, I said, ‘we’ll break him up,’” Trump recalled today, in a speech about his new AI Action Plan at an event hosted in Washington, DC. He recounted what seemed to be a conversation between himself and an advisor who he didn’t name, who told him it would be “very hard” to break up Nvidia:I said, “why?” I said, “what percentage of the market does he have?”“Sir, he has 100%,” they said. “Who the hell is he? What’s his name?”“His name is Jensen Huang, Nvidia.”I said, “What the hell is Nvidia? I’ve never heard of it before.”He said, “you don’t want to know about it, sir.”Trump said he backed away from breaking up Nvidia after he realized it could be counterproductive. “I figured we could go in and we could sort of break them up a little bit, get them a little competition,” Trump said. “And I found out it’s not easy in that business. I said, ‘suppose that we put the greatest minds together and they work hand-in-hand for a couple of years.’ He said, ‘no, it would take at least ten years to catch him if he ran Nvidia totally incompetently from now on.’ So I said, ‘all right, let’s go on to the next one.’” “And then I got to know Jensen, and now I see why,” Trump added. Huang successfully convinced the Trump administration to let Nvidia sell its H20 chips to China, opening a significant new avenue of revenue that the US had previously closed due to concerns it could help a US adversary advance its own AI efforts. To assuage those fears, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has insisted that the chips it’s now allowing to be sold to China are only the “fourth-best” AI chips, and the idea is to get Chinese developers “addicted to the American technology stack.”Regardless of how it plays out for US policy, the change has been a boon for Nvidia, which even before the announcement had become the first publicly traded company worth $4 trillion. Under the Biden administration, the Justice Department had reportedly been probing the company on antitrust grounds. But Trump’s apparent about-face on breaking it up means we probably shouldn’t expect a lawsuit anytime soon.

We asked for the perfect Lego Nintendo Game Boy… did Lego deliver? After revealing this January that it would take up the challenge, it has revealed a most impressive take on the 1989 classic that’ll cost a relatively reasonable $60 in the US. It’s already up for preorder today for an October 1st ship date. At 3.5 inches (14cm) wide and 5.5 inches (9cm) tall, it looks like it’ll have almost the same dimensions as the original.As you’ll see in the many images below, this Game Boy doesn’t rely on miniature hats for its iconic fuchsia A and B buttons — Lego has seemingly created pitch-perfect buttons that appear to recess into the frame. The console’s curves are also captured remarkably well!And unless I’m very much mistaken, it comes with printed tiles rather than sticker labels to help replicate the Game Boy’s many, many iconic labels for its buttons, volume dial, on-off switch, “Dot Matrix With Stereo Sound” highlight, as well as larger features like the Game Boy’s mono speaker grille, battery compartment latch, and serial number around back that have proven difficult to emulate in bricks. (That serial number has an easter egg, by the way.)But perhaps best of all, this Lego Game Boy can show off actual scenes from the classic games using swappable lenticular lenses that’ll show you different images when viewed from different angles. You can pop in a brick-built cartridge of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening or Super Mario Land, and “watch” the classic Nintendo logo drop as you rotate the screen downwards (you’ll have to imagine the Game Boy’s da-DING beep). Sometimes I really miss the aesthetic of retro hardware. There's just something about how computers looked in the past that I really love, but I also know that trying to use said PCs in the modern era will only end in disappointment. That's when I remember that you can absolutely have a PC that looks like it was from the late 90s but pack it full of hardware that would make a 2023 computer blush.
