The AI boom has made building a competitive new PC genuinely painful. Memory and storage prices have surged to levels we haven't seen in years, and the parts that used to be afterthoughts now dominate the budget. So it feels almost contradictory to say that the same boom has made building a home server or lab easier than ever, but it truly has lowered the bar in ways that have nothing to do with price.

If you've dabbled with using a Plex server at home, you already know that, since last year, Plex has locked remote streaming behind a paywall. If you don't have Plex Pass, you can no longer watch your own library from outside your home network. The reasoning for that was pretty simple. Windows Update has always been one of those things that you tolerate instead of enjoying. Every month, Microsoft brings out a fresh batch of fixes and improvements, and every month, an increasing number of users find that the update has broken their PCs in new and unique ways. Keeping Windows secure is important, sure, but when an update either breaks a printer, or a game, or a feature that was otherwise perfectly working beforehand, the entire state of affairs doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

For who knows how long, I right-clicked images and somehow just ignored the AI actions menu right there. Whenever I wanted to do only some basic editing, like blurring or removing a background, I would first open the full editor and wait for it to load, only to realize I had spent more time opening the editor than doing the actual edit.
