I have used Raspberry Pi boards for years. They remain one of the easiest ways to get started with self-hosting, home automation, and small server projects. My experience with Raspberry Pi boards has generally been positive, but they come with a few limitations. Performance can become a bottleneck once you start running multiple services. Storage performance also depends heavily on the medium you use. MicroSD cards remain among the weakest components in many Raspberry Pi setups, especially when applications perform frequent reads and writes.

It's no surprise that the RAM market has not been at its best lately. With AI demand causing RAM prices to skyrocket, purchasing 32GB of DDR5 RAM for your AMD AM5 system feels pretty painful, especially if you still remember how much it used to cost. As such, if you're adamant on picking up a kit, then your best bet this Amazon Prime Day period is the Corsair Vengeance DDR5.

It has been a weird month for really small code adjustments that score noticeable performance wins. It was only a few days ago that we learned that someone modified three lines of code in the Linux kernel and achieved a 5% storage speed boost because of it. Now, someone has stepped forward and claimed that a single line change in the GCC compiler added a 12% performance boost for modern AMD and Intel chips in a SPEC CPU 2017 benchmark.

Local AI perhaps represented the first step towards making AI use private, confidential, and independent of cloud infrastructure, but there was always a catch.
