When it comes to accessing your files across your network, many people may share a drive or set up a server or NAS running a popular Linux distro. However, one way to share files across your network that you might have forgotten about is to use a spare USB port on a Wi-Fi router. For this demonstration and proof of concept, I am using a thumb drive, but it’s possible to plug in any-sized USB drive, provided there is enough power to run it. I have even used large Western Digital My Book drives with a dedicated power source.

For the better part of a decade now, Plex has been my media server of choice. I bought the Lifetime Pass a lifetime ago (pun intended), built my library around it, and never really felt the need to look elsewhere. So when I recently started setting up Jellyfin for a few friends (because let's face it, Plex pricing is preposterous now), it wasn't because I was planning to jump ship. However, curiosity got the better of me, and it was pretty impressive just how far the free and open-source alternative had come.

When it comes to control planes and management UIs for Docker containers, you’ve got plenty of options to choose from. Between its sheer number of container tools, built-in CI/CD pipelines, and support for everything from Docker and Podman to K8s, Portainer is the most common option out there. But if you prefer minimalist UIs, Dockhand and Dockge are just as reliable, with the former being my favorite ever since I ran into it a few months ago. But if you’re willing to install community plugins, you can even use Cockpit to control your Docker runtime.

As much as I love to tout Linux as the way forward for computing, I do have to admit that it's not perfect. Sometimes, the tech to do what you want just isn't there yet, and you have to rely on workarounds. For example, people using Firefox on Linux with an Nvidia GPU had to rely on the nvidia-vaapi-driver to get the job done. Now, Firefox is finally adding Vulkan rendering, thus removing the need for the workaround.
