Chrome Remote Desktop is an okay TeamViewer alternative, this free, open-source tool is better than both

Finding a reliable remote desktop solution often feels like a series of compromises: you either settle for the bare-bones simplicity of Chrome Remote Desktop or deal with aggressive ‘commercial use’ screens and subscription costs of TeamViewer.

Every month Windows gets an emergency patch, and I’m running out of reasons to stay

These updates are essential because they prioritize your device’s security, patch newly discovered vulnerabilities, fix bugs, and occasionally introduce some new features. It’s all fine and dandy until you install the monthly security updates and then see hue and cry among the Windows community and Reddit threads.

Why Zip drives dominated the 90s, then vanished almost overnight

In a market that evolves as quickly as this one, it's interesting to realize how many interesting inventions have been lost to time over the years, many of which we may never even have heard of. Today, removable storage is all about USB drives or external SSDs and HDDs (which...

Today, removable storage is all about USB drives or external SSDs and HDDs (which also connect to a computer via USB), but most will remember DVDs, CDs, and even floppy disks.

I stopped reaching for Raspberry Pi when the $60 board hit $95

For years, Raspberry Pi occupied a very specific spot in my brain. It was the board I reached for when I wanted a project to feel open-ended, a little scrappy, and still powerful enough to run a full operating system. That bargain started to wobble when the Raspberry Pi 5 arrived at $60 for 4GB and $80 for 8GB, which was already a noticeable shift from the old story people told about the Pi as a cheap default computer. By the time of this writing, the situation had gone from mildly annoying to impossible to ignore. Official price increases had pushed the Raspberry Pi 5 16GB to $305, while even the 4GB and 8GB models keep climbing.

I asked Gemini, Claude, and ChatGPT to build a customer landing page, and only one nailed the brief

A few weeks ago, I put the most powerful LLMs on the market head-to-head to find out which performs best at building a website with minimal user intervention. Tasked with creating a usable social networking platform for Dungeons and Dragons players, Anthropic's Claude Sonnet 4.6 emerged as the undisputed champion.

I spent $10 to turn my PC into a wireless console, and it’s the best couch gaming upgrade possible

There's a point where better graphics stop making a difference, and how you feel while playing starts to matter much more. That's exactly where I found myself. My PC is more than capable of delivering cutting-edge visuals, but over the past couple of years, I just haven't felt like sitting...

My PC is more than capable of delivering cutting-edge visuals, but over the past couple of years, I just haven't felt like sitting down to play for long hours anymore.

KDE Plasma 6.7 finally fixes a 21-year-old multi-monitor headache

Generally, I agree with the saying "Better late than never," especially when it comes to software fixes. Having a bug or annoying behavior hang around in the code forever is a lot more irritating than the fix arriving late. However, sometimes a tweak comes so late that it makes me...

Having a bug or annoying behavior hang around in the code forever is a lot more irritating than the fix arriving late. However, sometimes a tweak comes so late that it makes me wonder if there's perhaps an upper limit on using that phrase.

Flat Ethernet cables look great — but there’s a catch

Ethernet cables come in many different colors, but they really only come in two shapes: the normal, round variety, and then the flat variant. The latter has become very popular in homes and offices everywhere for their ability to blend into a baseboard or be run underneath a rug or carpet, and are some of the best-selling cables on Amazon. It's easy to see the appeal, but before you order hundreds of feet and start routing them through your home, it's worth understanding what you're actually trading away, because flat Ethernet does come with a set of very real drawbacks.

Obsidian gives you total control over your folder structure, which sounds great until you realize that total control means total responsibility. I had a system at one point - actually, I had several. Each one made sense at the time when I built it, and each one stopped doing its thing when my notes started piling up faster than I could sort them. I'd open the app, drop something in, tell myself I'd file it later, and then spend the next session doing nothing but dragging notes into folders instead of actually using them. If you’re a scatterbrain like me, you know exactly what I mean.
