I still remember installing Microsoft PowerToys for the first time a couple of years ago just because I wanted to replace Windows Search with something simpler. At the time, I just wanted to get away from unnecessary web results and Start menu recommendations when I tried to open an app. But then, when Raycast rolled out on Windows as a beta last year, I decided to give it a shot since I used to rely on it quite a bit on my MacBook Air. Now that it's finally available as a stable build, I feel more comfortable talking about it.

Using Docker Desktop meant never having to open a terminal or command prompt on Windows 11. I enjoyed that convenience until I opened the Task Manager to check something and learned that the app’s helper processes were using over a GB of memory on my desktop. And I wasn’t even building or serving anything. I had assumed that stopping a container released the resources.

Sometimes, you want the convenience of a digital film without sacrificing all the benefits that come with owning the movie physically. Fortunately, you don't need to pick between one or the other; you can go for both at the same time. Someone has designed a smart Arduino-powered NFC scanner that lets you slot in a movie case as if it were a cartridge, and it'll play the movie with the press of a button.

Although Home Assistant’s terrific IoT paraphernalia management provisions and automation capabilities are worth highlighting, what I really love about this smart home platform is the sheer amount of ways I can customize it. The templates for deploying FOSS services within the app store alone make it possible to extend HASS’ functionality by bringing support for NVR solutions, ESP32 calibration tools, AI services, and a bunch of other utilities. That’s before I even mention the sheer number of wacky and ingenious integrations available on the Home Assistant Community Store.

It's been a while since my NAS was just the spot where I stored data. Between Docker containers, self-hosted services, backups, and, of course, media, what I want from the hardware has changed a lot. I have got a fairly old smart TV, not the archaic kind, but it's about 4-5 years old. And over time, I noticed it slowed down a bit, as is the case with any device. Even our smartphones and computers slow down after a few years. For the longest time, I ignored it because I just assumed that TVs have less powerful processors and don't always age as gracefully.

In my early ESP32 tinkering days, I’d only use the microcontroller to test with LEDs, resistors, and other circuitry components. In fact, writing simple C++ programs to perform basic tasks on the ESP32 was the farthest I’d go with this microcontroller. And even then, my entire motivation behind tinkering with ESP32 templates on Arduino IDE was to get some first-hand experience with coding.
