I connected Obsidian with Zotero and NotebookLM, and it’s the perfect research hub

Research can feel like juggling. I need a note-taking app to jot down my ideas. I also need an app to help me gather the information I need, and another to help me analyze what I collect. So I connected Obsidian, Zotero, and NotebookLM, and chaos finally had lanes.

I upgraded my motherboard, and I didn’t expect to love this part the most

Usually, a motherboard upgrade usually means an upgrade of the CPU, along with the usual improvements of moving to a newer platform: faster memory support, more expansion slots available, maybe even better I/O. One of the biggest features I didn't expect to love so much wasn't performance-related at all, but rather, a mechanical quality-of-life feature that I never knew I would care about: tool-less mechanisms for installing hardware on the board.

Ursa’s classic spherical profile and centered legends dress up any Topre keyboard. Your Happy Hacking Keyboard can finally get fresh caps. Ursa’s classic spherical profile and centered legends dress up any Topre keyboard. Your Happy Hacking Keyboard can finally get fresh caps. While regular keyboards have an embarrassment of keycap options, Topre boards like the HHKB or Realforce R3 don't. They've more or less been relegated to OEM-profile PBT keycaps with dye-sublimated legends, in light grey, charcoal, white, or (recently) a few more colorful options. Something as basic as black keycaps with white legends just didn't exist for unmodified Topre boards. Until now. Ursa is a new style of keycap for Topre electrocapacitive switches. I first wrote about them in April 2024, during the group buy, which was originally expected to ship in early 2025. Well, here …Read the full story at The Verge.

They don't use a ton of power, they look professional, and you can use them for a ton of different things. If you need to display information on a screen but don't need a high refresh rate, e-paper is an excellent option.

6 challenges I encounter while self-hosting with no coding experience

I've been self-hosting service for the past few months, but I'm not as far as I would like to be in my self-hosting journey. Over time, I've realized one of the things that people over-simplify about self-hosting is how much technical skill is involved.

5 simple yet ingenious services every user should self-host

The Nobel committee will love this. | Image: Getty President Donald Trump says he has instructed the Pentagon to immediately start testing nuclear weapons, citing a need to match “other countries [sic] testing programs.”Trump’s post on Truth Social included very few details on the nature of the tests, but says the “process will begin immediately.” It’s not clear whether Trump is referring to explosive tests of nuclear warheads or tests of systems capable of delivering them. The comments — arriving just before his anticipated meeting with China’s Xi Jinping, which resulted in reduced tariffs on Chinese imports —  appear to upend decades of American policy. The last US nuclear test was in 1992, before George HW Bush enacted a moratorium at the end of the Cold War.Trump’s post was riddled with errors: Russia, not the US, has the world’s largest nuclear stockpile, and no country, with the exception of North Korea, is confirmed to have tested nuclear weapons since the 1990s, according to the UN. The US is also a signatory to the international treaty banning nuclear weapons tests, though has not ratified it.

I'm sure most of you already know that modern CPUs run hot out of the box. In recent years, both Intel and AMD have pushed their chips closer to their thermal and power limits than ever before. That's why it's not unusual to see temperatures hovering in the high 70s or 80s while gaming, even with a high-end 360mm AIO cooler. Most people think that's a problem, as if their cooler isn't good enough, or they just got unlucky with the silicon lottery, but that's not usually the case.

The recent news of Qualcomm acquiring Arduino has stirred both excitement and unease in the maker and open-source hardware communities. Reports suggest that Arduino will retain its brand, tools, and mission under the deal and will continue to support chips from multiple manufacturers. Even so, the move raises several concerns about the future of Arduino, especially for hobbyists, educators, and smaller developers. Here are five reasons why I’m personally worried about this acquisition, based on what’s been shared publicly so far.

Lost your Meta Neural Band? A new one will cost $199

When you buy the $799 Meta Ray-Ban Display, you aren’t just getting a pair of smart glasses: you’re also getting Meta’s Neural Band, a small wristband that you use to control what’s on the glasses’ display. It’s an essential part of the product. But, if by some unfortunate circumstance, you...
When you buy the $799 Meta Ray-Ban Display, you aren’t just getting a pair of smart glasses: you’re also getting Meta’s Neural Band, a small wristband that you use to control what’s on the glasses’ display. It’s an essential part of the product. But, if by some unfortunate circumstance, you need to buy a replacement for the wristband, it’s been unclear how you would do that. The wristband isn’t listed for sale online. One buyer told The Verge that Meta’s customer service said it wasn’t possible to purchase a replacement. That led us to reach out to Meta just to make sure — it was hard to believe that the only solution to a lost Neural Band would be buying an entirely new pair of the smart glasses. It turns out that Meta actually will let you buy a new Neural Band if you contact customer service, but it’ll cost $199, making for a pretty expensive replacement. Only customers who have already purchased the Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses and need a band replacement that’s outside of Meta’s limited warranty policy will be able to buy the wristband on its own, according to Meta’s Tyler Yee. If you fall under those requirements, you can reach out to Meta’s customer support to make your case.
