Trump wanted to break up Nvidia — but then its CEO won him over

Not long ago, President Donald Trump hadn’t even heard of Nvidia, the most valuable tech company in the world. But once he found out about the AI chip giant, he says, he wanted to break it up. “Before I learned the facts of life, I said, ‘we’ll break him up,’”...
Not long ago, President Donald Trump hadn’t even heard of Nvidia, the most valuable tech company in the world. But once he found out about the AI chip giant, he says, he wanted to break it up.“Before I learned the facts of life, I said, ‘we’ll break him up,’” Trump recalled today, in a speech about his new AI Action Plan at an event hosted in Washington, DC. He recounted what seemed to be a conversation between himself and an advisor who he didn’t name, who told him it would be “very hard” to break up Nvidia:I said, “why?” I said, “what percentage of the market does he have?”“Sir, he has 100%,” they said. “Who the hell is he? What’s his name?”“His name is Jensen Huang, Nvidia.”I said, “What the hell is Nvidia? I’ve never heard of it before.”He said, “you don’t want to know about it, sir.”Trump said he backed away from breaking up Nvidia after he realized it could be counterproductive. “I figured we could go in and we could sort of break them up a little bit, get them a little competition,” Trump said. “And I found out it’s not easy in that business. I said, ‘suppose that we put the greatest minds together and they work hand-in-hand for a couple of years.’ He said, ‘no, it would take at least ten years to catch him if he ran Nvidia totally incompetently from now on.’ So I said, ‘all right, let’s go on to the next one.’” “And then I got to know Jensen, and now I see why,” Trump added. Huang successfully convinced the Trump administration to let Nvidia sell its H20 chips to China, opening a significant new avenue of revenue that the US had previously closed due to concerns it could help a US adversary advance its own AI efforts. To assuage those fears, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has insisted that the chips it’s now allowing to be sold to China are only the “fourth-best” AI chips, and the idea is to get Chinese developers “addicted to the American technology stack.”Regardless of how it plays out for US policy, the change has been a boon for Nvidia, which even before the announcement had become the first publicly traded company worth $4 trillion. Under the Biden administration, the Justice Department had reportedly been probing the company on antitrust grounds. But Trump’s apparent about-face on breaking it up means we probably shouldn’t expect a lawsuit anytime soon.

Here is Lego’s official Nintendo Game Boy — with lenticular display

We asked for the perfect Lego Nintendo Game Boy… did Lego deliver? After revealing this January that it would take up the challenge, it has revealed a most impressive take on the 1989 classic that’ll cost a relatively reasonable $60 in the US. It’s already up for preorder today for an October 1st ship date. At 3.5 inches (14cm) wide and 5.5 inches (9cm) tall, it looks like it’ll have almost the same dimensions as the original. As you’ll see in the many images below, this Game Boy doesn’t rely on miniature hats for its iconic fuchsia A and B buttons — Lego has seemingly created pitch-perfect buttons that appear to recess into the frame. The console’s curves are also captured remarkably well! And unless I’m very much mistaken, it comes with printed tiles rather than sticker labels to help replicate the Game Boy’s many, many iconic labels for its buttons, volume dial, on-off switch, “Dot Matrix With Stereo Sound” highlight, as well as larger features like the Game Boy’s mono speaker grille, battery compartment latch, and serial number around back that have proven difficult to emulate in bricks. (That serial number has an easter egg, by the way.)But perhaps best of all, this Lego Game Boy can show off actual scenes from the classic games using swappable lenticular lenses that’ll show you different images when viewed from different angles. You can pop in a brick-built cartridge of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening or Super Mario Land, and “watch” the classic Nintendo logo drop as you rotate the screen downwards (you’ll have to imagine the Game Boy’s da-DING beep). Or, pop in a different lenticular lens to see Link cozy up to Marin on the beach in Awakening’s most bittersweet scene:I built Nick Lever’s fan-designed Lego Game Boy myself, and have the real deal that plays actual cartridges too, but I’m going to be mighty tempted to pick up the official Lego one as well. If those buttons move when you push them, I doubt I’ll resist! Do wish it came with Tetris, too, though. Lego and Nintendo have also recreated part of the original US Game Boy commercial using the set. It’s on Instagram, and you may be able to play it (with a tap) in its embedded form below. Sometimes I really miss the aesthetic of retro hardware. There's just something about how computers looked in the past that I really love, but I also know that trying to use said PCs in the modern era will only end in disappointment. That's when I remember that you can absolutely have a PC that looks like it was from the late 90s but pack it full of hardware that would make a 2023 computer blush.

4 reasons why I still use Kodi in 2025

I’ve been called out plenty of times for still using Kodi in the big year 2025. People keep telling me I should switch to Plex because it’s more modern and apparently has better features. However, I will tell you what I tell everyone: Kodi is still the king. I’ve been a Kodi user for a long time. I’ve tried Plex and Jellyfin too, but I’ve probably been using Kodi since back when it was still called XBMC, short for Xbox Media Center.

Implementing NVMe cache for my home server was a great idea in theory. The faster speeds and lower latency that was possible with these drives was a motivating factor when putting everything together, but the results were much more troublesome than I had ever expected them to be. Overheating drives, elevated power draw, and none of the performance I had actually wished for. Switching to SATA drives for cache was a great choice, and there are five main reasons why.

When Microsoft first announced its Recall feature, it stirred up quite a bit of controversy. Well, okay, people still feel really uneasy about it, and for good reason; the system takes snapshots of your current screens, scans them for data, and then stores the information to recall later on. The idea is that you can then use Copilot to ask questions about your past session usage, and it can go through the logs and dig up relevant details about what you're asking.

Google’s CEO says ‘AI is positively impacting every part of the business’

Google is all-in on AI, and based on the company’s latest quarterly earnings, AI has been good for its bottom line. In a press release for Alphabet’s Q2 2025 earnings, CEO Sundar Pichai said that “AI is positively impacting every part of the business” and that features like AI Overviews...
Google is all-in on AI, and based on the company’s latest quarterly earnings, AI has been good for its bottom line. In a press release for Alphabet’s Q2 2025 earnings, CEO Sundar Pichai said that “AI is positively impacting every part of the business” and that features like AI Overviews and AI Mode are “performing well.”The company is also planning to increase its planned capital expenditures for the year up to $85 billion, according to Pichai. That’s an increase of $10 billion, and could be a sign that Alphabet wants to keep pace with massive data center buildouts from companies like OpenAI and Meta. “Our updated outlook reflects additional investment in servers, the timing of delivery of servers, and an acceleration in the pace of datacenter construction, primarily to meet cloud customer demand,” CFO Anat Ashkenazi said during Alphabet’s Q2 earnings call. For the quarter, Alphabet reported revenue of $96.4 billion, up 14 percent year over year, with revenues for its “Google Search” segment reaching $54.1 billion.Pichai’s comments in the press release on AI align with recent findings from Pew, which suggested that AI Overviews appear to be successful at getting people answers but at the expense of clicks through to the websites that would otherwise offer them. AI Mode also has more than 100 million monthly active users in the US and India, while AI Overviews has more than 2 billion monthly users across “more than 200 countries and territories and 40 languages,” Pichai said during the call. “We are also seeing that our AI features cause users to search more as they learn that Search can meet more of their needs,” which is “especially true for younger users.” Pichai also said that the Gemini app now has 450 million monthly active users, “with daily requests growing over 50 percent from Q1.”During the second quarter, Google hosted its annual I/O developer conference, which was jam-packed with AI-focused announcements like the rollout of AI Mode for Search (which news publishers have called “theft”), upgrades to its video and image generation models, Gemini AI in Chrome, and much more powerful smart replies in Gmail. (Based on that event, Google’s future is Google googling.) And just ahead of I/O, Google hosted an Android-focused show where it revealed the youthful new design language for Android 16.At the same time, Google is anticipating the ruling from the remedy phase of the Department of Justice’s lawsuit, which took place during the second quarter as well. Last August, a judge ruled that Google “is a monopolist” in that antitrust case, and remedies could include Google getting broken up. (A lot of companies have expressed interest in buying Chrome.)The company also changed its “G” logo for the first time in nearly a decade.Alphabet will be hosting its earnings webcast beginning at 4:30PM ET.Update, July 23rd: Added details from Alphabet’s earnings webcast.

You’re getting a lot of TV at the discounted price. | Image: The Verge Finding a quality budget TV isn’t as hard as it used to be, with numerous deals happening throughout the year. Case in point, the 65-inch configuration of Amazon’s Fire TV Omni QLED Series is back down to its Prime Day low of $449.99 ($270 off). The discount makes it cheaper than the starting price of the smaller 55-inch model.Amazon Fire TV Omni QLEDAmazon’s Fire TV Omni QLED features built-in microphones for Alexa commands, low input lag, and support for two-way video calling with a compatible webcam. It also provides access to Netflix, Prime Video, Disney Plus, and most major streaming services.Where to Buy: $719.99 $449.99 at Amazon (65-inch)The Fire TV Omni QLED Series sits above Amazon’s standard Fire TV Omni Series and 4-Series sets, but it’s not quite as advanced as the newer Omni Mini-LED Series. It features a 4K resolution and uses a layer of quantum dots to improve aspects like color accuracy and brightness. It also supports full-array local dimming, offering better backlighting and contrast than an edge-lit set. The technology also helps reduce blooming, which is that annoying glow of light around bright objects on dark backgrounds. Both of these technologies can have a big impact on overall image quality when watching movies and playing games. There are three HDMI 2.0 ports and one HDMI 2.1 port with eARC. While the TV features a 4K panel, its refresh rate tops out at 60Hz. That means you won’t get to enjoy the smoother animations offered by 120Hz, which is supported by current generation consoles. That said, the TV offers support for advanced HDR formats and boasts a built-in sensor that automatically optimizes the brightness based on the ambient light in your room.Additionally, the Fire TV Omni QLED Series features Amazon’s ambient experience. This turns the TV into a canvas for displaying over 2,000 works of fine art and photography, personal photos, and helpful Alexa widgets. Speaking of Alexa, the TV has integrated microphones (with an on/off switch) that offers hands-free control, making it easy to set timers, check sports scores, and turn on your favorite movie. You can also bring up a live camera feed from your home security system when someone approaches your front door.

Android Authority isolated the image of the four phones it found on the Play Store banner. | Image: Android Authority Google seems to have revealed its entire Pixel 10 lineup a little less than a month before its launch event. On Wednesday, Android Authority said it managed to uncover a banner of the Pixel 10, 10 Pro, 10 Pro XL, and 10 Pro Fold while “poking around” on the Google Play Store on Android. The banner doesn’t appear directly on the Play Store right now, which means Android Authority likely took some extra steps to enable it. Still, it clearly shows all four devices with the text, “Meet the new Pixel 10 Series.” The Pixel 10 Pro XL, 10 Pro Fold, and 10 Pro seem to appear in the silver-blue “Moonstone” color, while the base Pixel 10 is shown in bright blue. The designs — and colors — of the devices in the banner line up with the flood of leaks we’ve seen in recent weeks, including the teaser shared by Google itself. The banner also shows a promotion offering $50 off the devices that will remain in effect until October 13th.Rumors suggest that Google is planning updates across the Pixel 10 lineup, including adding a third camera to the base Pixel 10, giving the Pixel 10 Pro a spec bump, and dustproofing its Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Google is set to launch its Pixel 10 lineup during its Made by Google event on August 20th.
