It promised to run advanced Gen AI that could understand conversational stumbles, string multistep requests together, and replace rigid voice commands. For about a year and a half, anyone running a GeForce RTX 50 graphics card was flying half-blind on temperatures. The card was quietly tracking its own hottest point, the hotspot or junction reading, but Nvidia had walled that number off from the monitoring tools everyone uses, leaving owners with only the gentler averaged GPU temperature. Upgrading a container like Portainer is normally one of the least stressful parts of running a homelab. I have done it many times without a second thought. The last upgrade I did also felt normal because everything was working exactly the way it was supposed to. Weeks later, I was pulling compose files from my homelab for an article I was working on. What are the signs of an industry in trouble? Certainly, shortages and inflation are the most obvious signs, but it's not something that has ever been unusual in the PC hardware market. I would, however, argue that the more interesting signs are the ones that hide in plain sight. For example, a shift in consumer behavior. Consumers start changing the way they buy to adjust to a market that simply isn't providing them goods or services at a price point that's reasonable.

Much of the controversy surrounding artificial intelligence lies with its ability to do all the thinking for the user, rather than pushing them to think for themselves or assisting them with things they might otherwise miss. It's a fair criticism; a lot of AI tools do have a tendency to take the reins, so to speak (although that can be avoided by prompting them correctly, but I digress).
