I go to great lengths to ensure my data is protected and secure. After all, much of what I'm backing up is sentimental: family photos, recipes, etc. It's the kind of information I don't want to lose, but that I don't reasonably have space to store in a physical format. While there are tons of cloud backup options, they all suffer from the same flaw — they run on third-party servers. Regardless of promises of security and high-level encryption, there's no guarantee. Syncthing circumvents that concern by keeping my data off the cloud, backed up to multiple devices in my home.

VS Code is perfect for most of us, but let’s not pretend it’s just another open-source tool. The source code is available under the MIT license, but the product you actually download from Microsoft is distributed under a different license. It also includes telemetry and tracking.
